The current study has several major limitations.Although gender roles appear to be relaxing with respect to the consumption of appearance-enhancing products,men's hesitation to talk about their appearance insecurities might have impeded the validity of our research findings.Pope,Phillips,and Olivardia argue that men are "trapped between impossible ideals on the one side and taboos against feeling and talking about it on the other...boys and men are suffering" (2000,p.5).The male respondents in this study may have found it difflcult to acknowledge the extent to which their self-esteem is linked to their appearance concerns.Secondly,future studies should attempt to determine a relationship between consumer masculinity and demographic characteristics.A lack of sufficient representation of different demographic groups in the sample prevented adequate exploration of the extent of this relation-ship.A study with a broader sample would be better able to establish that relationship.Lastly,due to a lack of research in the area of consumer masculinity,established scales were not found for several variables selected for this study.Therefore,the researchers created scales themselves.Future research is needed to investigate more relevant constructs.For example,masculine ideology,measured by the Male Role Norms Scale and Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory,may prove to have some relevance to consumer masculinity.
